Philosophically Egoism theory purports that oneââ¬â¢s self is or should be the motivation and reasons of our own actions.à This theory has two variations, descriptive or normative variation and altruism variation.à Altruism variation holds that one should maximize good for all being in the world (Hobbes, 1651). Fallacy of Psychological Egoism Psychological egoism theory states that people are always motivated by their own interests.à Thisà however hastilyà generalizes actions and their motivation à since there are instances we can disapprove this such as, when an individual smokes .this is an act that can be harmful to oneââ¬â¢s wellbeing thus not act inà self interest, others such as soldiers carry out their duties without considering personal gains. There are also instances where motivations to act may appear to be of no self interest à at face value but à are nevertheless self interest motivated (Rachels, J., 2003).à For example if an individual is motivated to act out of fear or his acts are motivated by fear, he/she may be acting in the interest of self-preservation. On the other hand, these actions/reactions may be driven by the interest of the other individual or threats from this other individual thus his/her action may be classified as an action motivated for otherââ¬â¢s interest.à In this case, the individual actions are what she/he is motivated to do, for instance run. The strong and weak versions of Ethical Egoism The ethical egoism can be split into two versions; the strong and the weak versions.à The strong version supports the endorsement of an individualââ¬â¢s own good as the moral thing to do.à Individual actions that are driven by self-interest or self fulfillment arise out of moral judgement while the weak version supports the premise that there are situations where it may be prudent to ignore personal welfare when making moral judgement (Rachels, J., 2003). For instance if a soldier lies on a grenade to save his friends he may act this way to be able to live with himself In other words if he acted otherwise he may live the rest of his life with a guilty conscience .However the strong version might interpret this action as the moral thing to do. Contrast in Motivation Doctrines of the two theories Psychological egoism theory is the empirical doctrine that an individualââ¬â¢s act is a desire for oneââ¬â¢s own welfare (Sigmund, F., 1966).à However, these acts usually conceal the determining motives.à This concealment is usually in their self-interest.à The theory results from observation of human behaviour and can only be proved empirically if there are no exceptions.à It makes no claim to how individuals should act for their self-interest.à This premise can be argued to be verifiable but non-moral. On the other hand, the ethical egoism theory is prescriptive doctrine that individuals actions are in self-interest that is for personal welfare thus the personal welfare is the most valuable thing for an individual.à However, the theory does not claim that all individuals seek their own self interest.à It only claims that individuals should seek their own self-interest that is all individual might not seek self-interest (Sigmund, F., 1966).à For the ethical egoism theory to hold or to be proven as a theory its premises must hold for all individuals. Differences between ethical egoism and psychological egoism Psychological egoism is descriptive while the ethical egoism theory is prescriptive, that is, the psychological theory states why individuals act the way they do while the ethical theory suggests the reasons for such.à The other difference is concerned with their motivation doctrines.à In psychological egoism it is human nature to be driven by selfish reasons whereas in the ethical egoism theory selfish acts are the morally right thing to do (More, G.E., 1903).Psychological egoism deals with reality while ethical egoism deals with what reality should be. Ità can also be argued that ethical egoism approves of cooperative behaviourà while psychological egoism does not since the theoryà believes in achieving maximum welfare though selfish actions . Conclusion Self-interest actions are not always selfish actions in that one can act in such a way as to benefit or for his personal welfare improvement.à Such actions cannot be termed as selfish and this is always seen as acts out of self-interest.à Self-interest acts are not always selfish acts but selfish actions are always out of personal self-interest. For example if an individualââ¬â¢s self interest is to obey the law we can claim the individual is doing this out of self interest, that is, it is in his/her self interest to avoid legal troubles like being jailed.à This can be seen as a selfish act.à But by obeying the law, it can also be argued that he is doing this in the interest of others or out of consideration of others.à In this case, this is not a selfish act.à However, self-interest actions are not always incompatible with the interest of others for example to help others, which is not a self-interest act.à An individual must first help himself inorder to be in a position to help others. Kafka on the Shore Essay The final interaction between the main characters of the book and Japanese myth and legend occurs when Kafka discovers his father is dead and the police are looking for him. He flees to Oshimaââ¬â¢s family cabin in the woods for a second time. It is there he finds a door to the Japanese underworld. It is here that he discovers what happened to his Japanese Dreams mother and sister. He also encounters Miss Saekiââ¬â¢s ghost, and in the process of wandering the underworld discovers himself in the process. This ties into the Japanese myth of Izanagi and Izanami (Izanagi, and Izanami: Mukashbanashi Library website: http://www.mukashibanashi. org) They are comparable to Zeus and Hera in Greek mythology. At one point in this myth Izanami gives birth to their son Ho-Musabi, or fire. In the process of birthing fire Izanami is burned to death. Izanagi travels to Yomi or the underworld to find her. This is very similar to Kafkaââ¬â¢s journey of self discovery in the forest near the cabin in the mountains. Conclusion Japanese mythology has played a very important part in both Japanese literature and film in the fifty years since World War II. It is through the eyes of writers like Haruki Murakami, and the artistic vision of directors like Hayao Miyazaki that Western cultures can come to understand and love the myths and legends of Japan. Analysis of Starbucks Free Online Research Papers Starbucks Coffee, Tea and Spices started out in 1971 as a local coffee bean roaster and retailer in Seattle, Washington by three partners, two of which were teachers and the other a writer. These three men were inspired by a mutual friend to open their first store. In 1983, Howard Schultz joined the company and saw the potential of this small coffee bean retailer. Many times he went to the owners with his visions and dreams for their company and how it could grow and many times he was met with rejection. Opportunity knocked in 1987, and with help from investors he bought Starbucks Coffee, Tea and Spices and changed the name to Starbucks. Even though the company recently closed 600 of its under-performing company-owned stores they still have plans to open 200 more stores in 2009. Starbucks believes in order to increase their sales and draw in more customers they need to make some changes as competition is fierce, especially in this economy. They feel that by closing under-producing stores, redesign the space behind the counters, using automatic espresso machines to speed up production time and transform the ââ¬Å"Customer Experienceâ⬠they can achieve this goal, among many changes. Another way they are trying to attract customers is they want the customers to feel like Starbucks is their ââ¬Å"third homeâ⬠and even provides free Wi-Fi to its customers. They want customers to experience Starbucks, not just come in and buy coffee. This is going to be quite a challenge for Starbucks as the economy is unstable, the presidential election is right around the corner, people are losing their homes and their jobs. The consumers are also tightening their spending. While I research and learn about Starbucks and what the big deal is with this high priced coffee company, I found myself really admiring Howard Schultz and how he has guided and mentored this company. And, after researching and learning how and why people spend, I realized that I buy Starbucks out of habit, not loyalty. Until today I could not explain why I only buy Starbucks whole bean coffee, 4 bags at a time. The coffee is good but does it warrant paying $11 per bag? Then I realized that I buy out of habit. The outcome of this session long project will be interesting to me to see if, after this is all done, will I still buy Starbucks out of habit or will I become another loyal customer? Starbucks and Seattleââ¬â¢s Best Coffee are the only super premium national-brand coffees actively promoted by SYSCO Corporation (US Securities and Exchange Commission). Products other than whole bean coffees and coffee beverages sold in Starbucks retail stores are obtained through a number of different channels. Physical Facilities The Starbucks website does state that they own several distribution centers throughout the U.S. and that they have even built international distribution centers. I was unable, however, to find any information regarding physical size or interior/exterior attributes. There was also no specific information regarding the locations of these distribution centers. I was able to check some state websites and locate distribution centers in California, Oregon and Nevada. But again no other details were released. Distribution Advantage Although there was no specific information regarding the number of distribution centers for the company Starbucks it still seems that the company does have the competitive advantage in regards to distribution of their products. Most of these advantages come from their partnerships with other companies and organizations such as Kraft foods, Barnes Noble, and SYSCO. These companies either take over the distribution of products or help with distribution for the company. This allows Starbucks to produce more product and results in more competitive prices for their consumers. The company is constantly expanding their distribution outlets as well. This allows consumers to find all their favorite Starbucks products at many convenient outlets (starbucks.com). If Starbucks continues to increase their product variety, distribution outlets and distribution channels, soon they will not just have the competitive advantage, they will become an unstoppable force in the coffee industry. Promotional Mix Starbucks generally does not use conventional advertising methods because the company as found that there is too much competition for consumers attention in TV, radio and print media. In fact the company did not begin to use conventional advertising methods such as TV advertising until 2007. The company tends to rely more on increased distribution and brand recognition as well as its charitable contributions. The company, as mentioned before, is continually increasing their distribution outlets in order to continually improve their brand recognition and maximize accessibility of their products. By placing more products in places continually visited by consumers they are able to make their coffees more widely known to consumers then their competitorsââ¬â¢ brands. Another source of unconventional advertising is their use of charitable work to advertise their brand image. Starbucks usually picks one or two charity events in the community it serves to promote the company. The company feels that this will also inspire people inside and outside the company and reinforce the companyââ¬â¢s value and image (Lorenzini, 1993). The companyââ¬â¢s principals state that ââ¬Å"every store is part of a community and we take our responsibility to be good neighbors seriously,â⬠(starbucks.com). It was in 2007 that the head of marketing at Starbucks, Anne Saunders, left the company for other opportunities. This allowed the company to head in another direction and explore new avenues in marketing and advertising of products. Today you are finally able to see commercials advertising the Starbucks brand and its products to consumers. Marketing Mix Until its introduction into television advertising, Starbucks had little means of advertising individual products. In fact, you actually did not know what products the company produced until you saw them in stores or at local kiosks. Even with itââ¬â¢s induction into the television world, Starbucks remains anything but conventional. Starbucks does run a few standard promotional TV campaigns. Campaigns in which the goal is obvious, promotes the product and makes the consumer feel they must buy it. These products include specific lattes or their new double shot canned espressos. If you have been watching this holiday season, however, you will notice that the ads promote something different, they promote something simpler: passing the cheer. They are promoting the season and the celebration of the holidays, there is no plug for a specific product or hint of a sales pitch. Way to go Starbucks! Promotional Advantage The companiesââ¬â¢ lack of conventional advertising methods did put them at a competitive disadvantage for several years. In fact the company held no advantage in marketing at all. They relied on everything but advertising to sell their products and unfortunately in this day and age it is almost impossible to survive without more advanced marketing strategies. Competitors such as McDonalds and Dunkin Doughnuts have had an advantage in regards to promotion for several years. The companies new found advertising methods do have the potential to give them the competitive advantage in promotion. If they continue to explore different avenues of advertising they will increase their brand recognition with consumers and eventually increase brand loyalty. Pricing Strategies It was extremely difficult to find any information regarding the pricing strategies of Starbucks. General information found on the internet stated that Starbucks ââ¬Å"prices its products competitively with prevailing high-end coffee prices. Starbucks represents an attractive combination of affordable prices, high quality and convenience,â⬠(Song-Ming Kim, 2002). The only information I was able to find that was not a generic response to pricing was in regards to their drink size. They referred to it as Goldilocks pricing, as in the story of the three bears and finding something that was not too big or too small but finding something that is just right. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s why Starbucks offers their drinks in three sizes. The psychology is based on avoidance of extremes. If I offer two sizes, regular and large, most people will go for the regular. If I then add a third size, extra large, people will be drawn to the one in the middle. Even if no one ever buys a single extra large (and the extra large size in Starbucks is a pint of coffee !) just having it offered will persuade many customers to upgrade. A quick calculation shows the power of this approach. Suppose that selling regular size makes a net profit of 5% of sales after fixed costs i.e. it is just keeping the lights on. Persuading just one person in 4 to take the next size up doubles this,â⬠(Drysburgh). Pricing Advantage It is becoming evident that Starbucks no longer has any pricing advantage in the coffee market it if it ever had one to begin with. Recent emerging competitors such as McDonalds and Dunkin Doughnuts are now becoming known for their good, inexpensive coffees. Starbucks has taken steps to become a stronger competitor in regards to pricing. They are currently researching a campaign that would include offering a cup of coffee for just $1, a cup that would include free refills. This definitely is something that no other competitor is offering at the moment. This strategy will definitely bring in more consumers but may hurt the sales of other products that produce more revenue for the store. This new pricing strategy is still in the experimental stage. From gaining knowledge to entertainment, media has been having the reputation of providing all the information needed by the public. However, the society also points out the mass media as the greatest influence of aggressive behavior of the viewers. Through the movies and television shows that are being released by the media, people learn to conform and adopt the attitudes that are portrayed by the characters. The constant changing society has challenge the culture and values of the people around the world. The popular culture has been very influential making the society conform to the new trends. However, there are some factors in the society that are not changing regardless of the transparency of its effects. In other words, these are the aspects that affect the lives of the people negatively but still considered as adequate because of the acceptance of the mainstream. Media violence is one of the negative elements of the society but still existing despite the evident effects to the people. The Viewers and the Media Violence The behavior of the person shows the kind of television program he or she watches (Science Daily). Apparently, media violence does not affect only those who already understand the language and actions of a certain movie or television show. In fact, even the toddlers are being affected by these aggressive behaviors on screen. The people learn based on what they could see in their environment. Undeniably, mass media is one of the most influential factors that is present in this post modern world. The values that people adapt from their surroundings help in developing their personalities as they grow older. Since media has been the easiest tool in gaining information, it has also become an instrument to learn and adapt the culture of the society. The children that are just starting to learn in the society is being trained and influenced by the behaviors that are being portrayed in movies and television programs. Everyday, a home is being penetrated not only by thousands of advertisers that persuade every member of the family to buy a certain product. In fact, the television serves as the bridge of the people to the fictional world that are perfectly created by the mass media. Thousands of scenes from television shows and advertisements are being portrayed and most of them are adopted influencing the mind and personality of an individual. Countless murders and other acts of violence are shown making the audience feel the danger present outside their homes. The martial arts battle, shootings, knifings, fistfights, and exploding cars are just few of the scenes that can be watched on movies or television shows. These acts of violence are usually done by the heroes and villains who often serve as the role models for the young adults in the society (Freedman 4). The aggressive behaviors that the children often see on screen are committed by the live actors or even animated figures that appear in the best movies as well as the worst. On the other hand, the existence of violence in the society has not created by the media themselves. In fact violence has been in the society even before television was invented, movie houses were constructed, and video games were released. Aggression is a nature of man and it has been present even before the technology enter the scene. The public has been blaming the media for the aggression that their shows cause to the people especially to children; however, the media has been firm on telling that their aggressive shows represent the violence of the society. This issue has been at the heart of debate in the society. The presence of media relies on the elements of the society while the society relies on the information that are being offered by the mass media. Effects of Media Violence As the child becomes older, he or she is being accustomed with the information available in his or her surroundings. The internet, television shows, video games, and advertising are the sources of information of children nowadays (Wintour). The presence of media has undeniably influenced the young adults as they grow up to be mature individuals. The aggressive behaviors that they can see on television, movies, or even video games are being adapted and accepted to their own construction of reality. The child learns to hit his playmate when he gets mad, throw things when he is irritated, and shout when somebody did not pay attention to him. These are all examples of aggressive behaviors which may appear to be simple and normal attitude of a child. Oftentimes, the society fails to notice these simple behaviors as a problem that needs to be solved before it gets worse. The video games that are sold in the market with a goal to teach children to stand diversity has undeniably created an impression that it would enhance the knowledge of the young adults in technology and eliminated the idea that this would trigger the aggressive behavior of the player. The children will play as the main character that is given a task to protect a territory and kill the animated figures that would hinder him to win the game. The concept of this game sets the mind of the young players to fight with the use of guns and knives (Oââ¬â¢Hehir) Frequently, learning to behave aggressively is the tested effect of media violence. This effect is also referred to as instigation of aggressive impulses, disinhibition of socialization against aggressive behavior and imitation of violence (Potter, 25). The child may not show an aggressive behavior after watching series of violent shows but the child would definitely think that aggression is acceptable in the society. Moreover, the child may not imitate the actions that were portrayed by the media, but the scenes may create fear to the young minds of the viewers. Since the information on media sources are the most accessible source of knowledge, the viewers may accustomed them and accept them as part of reality. Media violence produces short-term increases by priming existing aggressive scripts and cognitions, increasing physiological arousal, and triggering an automatic tendency to imitate observed behaviors. Media violence produces long-term effects via several types of learning processes leading to the acquisition of lasting (and automatically accessible) aggressive scripts, interpretational schemas, and aggression-supporting beliefs about social behavior, and by reducing individualsââ¬â¢ normal negative emotional responses to violence (Anderson et al. 81). Apparently, mass media gives all the necessary information that the people need in order to function well in the society. The media may represent the events that often occur in the society but those should not also be the basis of the messages that are being conveyed to the audience. The real events are filmed and added with more spices to make the viewers buy what the media has prepared for them. Although aggression is long associated to human, there are still factors in the society that provoke people to behave aggressively. Mass media sells products to the public. These products do not consist only of the consumer goods that the society needs in order to survive. The television programs that are being shown to the public are products of mass media that the society willingly buys. Unquestionably, the media is an influential and powerful tool to make the society a better place; however, mass media sources have been very consistent in telling only the truth to their customers. The element of the society that should help the people to lessen the societal problems become an instrument to pass the negative aspects of the society from generation to generation. However, the people can still select the products carefully. Buying violent products is telling the media to produce more (Edgar 59). The society needs to be wiser in selecting the program that would portray less aggression and help the people to participate more on salient topic in the society rather than the fiction stories that affect negatively to the lives of the viewers.
